Fireproofing kids

Tweed Coast families have even more reason to prevent house fires, thanks to an exciting revamp of the Brigade Kids website – a community initiative between Fire and Rescue NSW and McDonald’s to help make NSW families safer through fire education.
Kids and families can now visit the Brigade Kids website (www.brigadekids.com) and expect to find a whole new world of online fun, including movies, music videos and interactive games such as the new Junior Fire Fighter Challenge.
Interviews with firefighters, virtual tours and educational activities will keep children entertained for hours, while learning the important steps in what to do in case of a fire.
As well as brushing up on fire safety knowledge online, Tweed Coast families are invited to attend Brigade Kids Day at McDonald’s restaurants on Sunday, May 1 to have the chance to meet firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW who will be visiting selected McDonald’s restaurants throughout NSW.
The event will not only help educate families on fire safety at home, but also support the Burns Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Fundraising will take place in the lead-up and on Brigade Kids Day to help doctors and nurses continue their live-saving work treating kids with serious burn injuries from house fires.
McDonald’s Tweed Centro licensee, Michelle Orton-Dessaix, said she was committed to sup-porting the important work of Fire and Rescue NSW in local communities and the Burns Unit at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
“House fires can be a devastating experience for the people affected and for their community. That’s why McDonald’s is committed to supporting BrigadeKids.com, Brigade Kids Day and Fire and Rescue NSW to help families prepare their homes and make our communities safer,” said Michelle.
“Our ultimate goal is to work together and help reduce the number of child-related burn incidents that Burns Unit doctors and nurses have to face each year, particularly during the winter months when the risk of a home fire is at its highest,” concluded Michelle.
