Standing by their convictions to help kids

As a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, Mark Occhilupo is probably about to commit some crimes against fashion but don’t worry, he will be punished.
Occy is one of a number of bosses and personalities putting their hands up to be locked up for charity. He will join recently re-elected State Member Geoff Provest, Tweed Councillor Warren Polglase, Destination Tweed CEO Phil Villiers and Olympic swimming legend Mike Wendon – along with a number of other prominent local identies behind bars at Tweed City this weekend.
The group will be part of the “Time 4 Kids” initiatives run by Police and Community Youth Clubs across NSW.
A simulated jail will be set up at Tweed City Shopping centres from 10.30am on Saturday, April 9 and the community leaders will be locked up and calling on friends and other contacts to “bail
them out”.
According to Tweed Heads PCYC’s Mark Madden this is the second year that Tweed PCYC has been involved in the event which is being held in conjunction with Youth Week celebrations across the State.
“We greatly appreciate these prominent locals lending their support to what should be a fun few hours at Tweed City,” he said.
“The event allows us to draw people’s attention to the valuable work we do and assists us in generating funds to improve our services and facilities.”
And the good thing for Mark and his staff – mostly volunteers –  unlike their other major fundraiser – the golf day, which was postponed until later this month because of the weather, everyone is “inside” for this event.
Mark said fundraisers like Time 4 Kids and the Golf Day helped them to offer valuable services to the Tweed community.
“It costs us more than $600,000 a year to operate and the bulk of funds are generated locally by our club through user fees, grants, our weekly markets and fundraising schemes such as this,”  he admitted.
The club, celebrating it’s 20th anniversary this year, offers a range of sporting and recreational activities as well as childcare, educational and crime prevention services and has more than 2000 registered members ranging in age from two to more than 80.
“We encourage locals to visit Tweed  City on April 9 from 10.30am to 12.30pm to see our special guest detainees locked up and arranging bail,” he said.
Mr Madden thanked Tweed City Shopping Centre and other local businesses for their support. As well as the detainees there will be displays and information on the work of the PCYC.
Donations can be made on the day or by contacting 5599 1714.
