Almost 6000 runners took part in the Southern Cross University 10km Run on the first day of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Saturday, July 2.
Gold Coaster Michael Shelley came in first place with a time of 28.55, while Tasmania’s Melanie Daniels won the women’s Southern Cross University 10km Run in 35.06.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh also joined the 5998 runners, completing the event with a time of 1.03.08.
Laughing, Ms Bligh said she was glad it was over.
“The last kilometre, there was a head wind, but there were so many people out cheering you on,” said Ms Bligh.
“It’s very encouraging, you just want to keep going.”
Southern Cross University was well represented in the run, with most of its 70-strong corporate team participating in the event, while others contested the 21.1km ASICS Half Marathon and 42.195km Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Sunday.
Ms Bligh said she was looking forward to participating in the Southern Cross University 10km Run again next year.
“The 10km is a good workout. I love the Gold Coast race,” said Ms Bligh.
“It’s something to aim for in the middle of winter, to get you out of bed.
“I’d like to break the hour. I will come back next year.”
