Former Tweed Valley resident and journalist, David Lacey’s life will be celebrated with a memorial event celebrating his life (and his love of surfing) on Greenmount Hill at 4.30pm on Saturday, August 18.
David passed away on December 22 last year after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born on June 7, 1956 in Murwillumbah Hospital, David was the fourth child of Mick and Nancy Lacey of Bilambil.
His primary education was provided at Bilambil Public School where he was taught by his father. He gained his Higher School Certificate at Tweed River High School, representing the North Coast in Rugby League along the way.
He began a Diploma in Teaching at Lismore CAE before heading to the Big Smoke after one year to apply his talents to the Public Service, Telecom being the beneficiary of his ambitions, knowledge and skills for approximately seven years.
For something completely different, he headed to New Guinea for a short stint in that country’s public service before answering the call of the Tweed and heading back home.
David had always harboured an ambition for a career in journalism and, after a persistent campaign, gained a position as a cadet journalist with the Tweed paper where he learnt his trade and discovered his true vocation. Like all good journalists he experienced the vagaries of life and its uncertainties as he pursued his dream, all the while gaining experiences and knowledge which contributed to his capacity for compassion and understanding in his reporting and in his relationships with his family and friends. He spent the last and most significant portion of his professional life as a sub-editor for the Sunday Telegraph where he applied his skills and craft with pride and professionalism.
David is survived by his mother (Nancy), brothers (Michael, Peter, Chris and Stephen) and sister (Kerry).
All who knew him are welcome to attend the Greenmount Hill memorial.
