Seven bands are set to battle it out in the final of Battle of The Bands at Tweed Heads Civic Centre on Saturday, September 10.
Organiser Kristie Hedley, secretary of the Safer Communities Alliance, said the two heats, held last Friday and Saturday nights, had been hotly contested.
“Friday night saw some stiff competition, with the judges putting through three bands,” she said.
“First came Byron three-piece ‘Potato, Potato’ made up of three extraordinarily talented 14-year-olds, one of whom has a wicked talent for playing the recorder like you’ve never heard it before.
“Equal second was ‘D.A.W.N’, (a heavy rock/metal band from the GC who impressed the crowd with their originals and their cover of the Pantera classic ‘Walk’) and When Words Collide (a metal core band from the Tweed, with a guitarist who can whip his hair impressively for 20 minutes straight).”
She said Saturday night again saw some amazing talent – but only two bands could go through.
“First was the well oiled Indie machine that is Byron’s ‘Alice Blu’, who had the crowd on their feet and loving it,” Kristie said.
“ Second to go through was the GC’s Double Lined Minority, a pop punk outfit exploding with energy and great hooks like ‘We have the right to go crazy’.”
As well as the judges’ choices, after each heat, a People’s Choice vote was also held on the Tweed Battle of the Bands facebook page which saw over 1500 people vote over the weekend.
Voted through from Heat 1 is Arcanine – a group of local Tweed boys blending punk, metal and electronica. And Heat 2 saw the people opt for another Byron outfit, ‘Ben Meek & the Paper Navigators’ who, despite the fact they have only been together for a month, produced some exciting new sounds.
This Saturday, September 10, will see us back at the Tweed Civic Centre at 6pm for the seven finalists to battle it out for the $3500 in prize money.
The night will end with what will no doubt be a cracking performance from Murwillumbah favourite,’’T.O.U.C.H’, who always get the crowd pumped and are promising to give out some free merchandise.
“You can check all the details on the Tweed Battle of the Bands facebook page. $10 at the door,” Kristie said.
