The Tweed Shire is home to over 79,000 people and of that number, at least 20,000 are 65 years of age and over. The SES wants to ensure the Shire’s ageing population is prepared in the event of a flood.
As such, the Tweed Heads and Murwillumbah State Emergency Service Units invited members of the local community to attend the launch of the Tweed Elderly and Disabled FloodSafe Guide at Tweed Heads Bowls Club
last weekend.
Richmond Tweed Region Controller, Simon Gregg, believes the Guide is an essential read for an elderly person or person with disability.
“The Tweed Elderly and Disabled FloodSafe Guide includes information on how to protect your property and yourself if a flood occurs,” Mr Gregg said.
“Many older people and people with disability live independently in their own homes, retirement villages or nursing homes all within the flood prone area of Tweed and need to know how to best be prepared for a flood,” he added.
A week of SES activities kicked off on Tuesday, May 31 at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club and included presentations and discussions from volunteers throughout the week
“It was a great opportunity for the local community to come down to the Bowls Club and have a chat with SES volunteers and ask them about preparing their home for a flood,” said Mr Gregg.
