Armidale-Dumaresq SES Unit is the primary road crash rescue agency in the Armidale area. Over the years the unit has attended numerous road crashes and been responsible for rescuing many people from badly damaged vehicles, in some cases saving their lives in the process.
To be effective in this demanding task, a very high level of skill has to be developed and maintained. This requires the members of the SES Road Crash Rescue team to train regularly in the many skills involved. Skills range from the safe handling of a large rescue vehicle, through to the use of hydraulic equipment such as the well known Jaws of Life, vehicle stabilisation, management of broken glass, maintenance of the accident scene so as to facilitate examination by the police, to casualty care.
To maintain these skills, the Armidale SES unit needs a steady supply of unwanted cars on which to practise rescue work. These vehicles are usually automotive wrecks which are only of scrap metal value.
The Armidale SES Unit is generously supported by Cliff Wright Motors who have, over the years, provided vehicles for training purposes and continue to do so. The SES, however, has found in recent times that many more wrecks could be used than they are currently able to provide.
As the accompanying photo shows, each car can only be used once for this purpose as, by the time a rescue has been completed, it is fit only for scrap.
If you have a worn out car in your backyard, and like the idea of donating it for this purpose, Armidale-Dumaresq SES would love to hear from you. Please contact the unit on 0428 711 264 to arrange for its free removal.
