The Armidale mental health interagency group, in conjunction with the Armidale Urban River Group (AURG) and Landcare, is hosting a special tree planting event called Celebrate, Connect, Grow Armidale to promote mental wellbeing for the local Armidale Community on Sunday, October 14 from 9am -1pm.
The morning will feature activities and entertainment at Rologas Fields between Taylor and Douglas Streets.
On the day, community members can participate in seedling planting to assist with the re-generation of the creeklands, free face painting, jumping castle and live music, with a barbecue and morning tea provided by the Lions Club and information about local mental health services available.
This is one of hundreds of events being held around NSW in October as part of Mental Health Month.
Mental health issues affect more than one in five Australians every year, with anxiety disorders being the most common mental health challenge, followed by depression.
Mental Health Month creates an opportunity for people to think about the ways in which we can enhance our social and emotional wellbeing, thereby building our personal resilience and support networks.
Event co-ordinator and local mental health clinician Celia Halliburton said the Armidale Mental Health Month committee consists of representatives from local organisations, NSW Health, Richmond PRA, Medicare Local, St Vincent de Paul, Carers Assist and the University of New England.
“We are excited to join forces with well-established Armidale community groups AURG and Landcare to provide an event that encourages us all to think about our mental health and wellbeing and promote positive mental health in our community,” she said.
The aim of the morning is to ensure that everyone leaves, having enjoyed themselves and also knows where they can go for help if they do feel as though their, or a loved one’s, mental health might be affecting their ability to function on a daily basis. So come along for a special day and remember to wear long sleeves, a hat, shoes and gloves.
