Armidale embroiderer Judy Wilford has won two awards at The Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) Inc National Awards exhibition held annually at the Ewart Gallery, Willoughby.
Judy’s two awards include The Vyonne Perrin Memorial Award for Best Traditional Work with a work titled ‘Vergeside Flora’ and The Mixed Media Award with a work titled ‘Summer Everlasting’.
The judge this year was Giles Alexandra, a well known artist based in Sydney who is a member of the Fine Arts Society: Contemporary — London and has numerous awards under his belt.
Judy’s two pieces were praised by the judge.
“Fantastic contemporary re-reading of a traditional medium embroidery with formal feeling for design and a sensitive and confident use of medium,” said Giles Alexandra.
The Australian Society of Miniature Art (NSW) Inc aims to create miniature works of excellence; foster traditional and modern works in miniature and encourage public awareness of miniature works of art. The Society is a member of the World Federation of Miniatures.
Judy joined the society as an exhibiting member three years ago, after submitting six works for selection into the membership status.
“I had known of the society for several years but it was the Sydney printer Bernhardine Mueller that finally moved me to apply and I was really surprised that my work was accepted,” said Judy.
“I work in the mediums of fabric and thread in a contemporary manner and I treat my works with the same respect as a painter treats theirs.
“There is no difference for me, it is the resulting work that matters.”
Judy did not expect to get the call from the society about winning the two awards and was pleasantly surprised, saying that it was nice to be acknowledged in an artistic medium like embroidery that rarely gets recognised.
