Join workshop with a plaster master

WALCHA-based sculptor, James Rogers, will bring his experience to New England Regional Art Museum for a sculpture workshop on 22-23 June.
James has been involved in local art-based initiatives for many years. He was one of the artists featured in Walcha’s City of Art Exhibition in 2003 and has also contributed to Walcha’s public art initiative to adorn the streets of Walcha with art, including large sculptures on the four access roads into town. His abstract sculpture Song Cycle is installed where those roads converge.
As a member of the Decade Club, James is also an experienced entrant in the Sculpture by the Sea competition.
“The challenge of Sculpture by the Sea is to make a piece that you feel can survive the indifference of an outdoor setting,” Mr Rogers said.
“It must stand up the majesty of the Bondi coastline in the proximity of 99 other attempts and be viewed by a crowd wearing shorts and sunglasses.
“To still feel at the end of three weeks that you are happy with your sculpture, even back at the studio after the show, is a reason why I continue to apply to be in the exhibition.”
With nearly a quarter of a century of teaching background in the Sculpture Studio at the National Art School, he will guide participants to experience the transformation of plaster powder into liquid; into solid; into sculpture.
Tapping into the sculptor’s extensive knowledge and experience, workshop participants are taught how to build simple armatures and create 3D forms that activate their own vision.
They are also expected to gain an appreciation for plaster’s versatility and adaptability through the process of modelling, construction, chiselling and carving.
