POTTSVILLE has taken out the Grade Two Region One Pennants title held at Ocean Shore Bowling Club last week.
The team of Merle Jackson, Janice Richards, Wendy Fielding, Coral Withers (Skip), Georgina Moore, Marie Comerford, Doreen Buckley and Aileen Swift (Skip) combined to take out the coverted title.
“These wonderful bowlers swept all before them to score 14-1/2 points (out of a possible 15) over three games to take home this flag,” Tweed Byron Ladies Bowls Association spokesperson Judith Tuckey said.
“Best wishes for good bowling to these women when they head off to Port Stevens in August to contest the state flag.”
Judith said in the Grade One the region was represented by Kingscliff.
“The Grade One side from Kingscliff Diane Jones, Beverley Lane, Eileen Taylor, Sandra Akers (Skip), Anne Wonka, Rita Butler, Colleen Smith, and Iris Azzopardi (Skip) really had their work cut out with some very tough opposition to contend with.
“Final scores didn’t really indicate just how well these ladies played. A fine effort from all the girls.”
Meanwhile the Grade Three and Four titles were held at Pottsville.
“Day one at both Ocean Shores and Pottsville proved difficult for all competitors with cold windy conditions prevailing,” she said.
“Thankfully day two weather, even with overcast skies, proved to be more pleasant for players to contend with.
In the Grade Three at Pottsville, Sharon Thomas, Jean Lee, Heather Ross, Shirley Brown, Joyce Beaumont, Joan Towner (Skip), Betty Croft (Skip) and Jean Kidman from Mullumbimby started with a good win in Round One.
However, even though the scores were quite close in rounds two and three, they were not able to contain their opposition. It was a valiant effort, though.”
Grade Four: Ocean Shores side Maxine Farquhar, Coral Tidewell, Pamela Sullivan, Maureen James (Skip), Margaret Hosie, Judith Williams, Marjorie Flesser and Nola Gartner (Skip) were the District representatives in this competition.
Again, as with Mullumbimby, these girls had a good win in their first game.
However, in Round Two they were overcome by a narrow margin by South Grafton (eventual winners of the flag).
Round Three produced a tied result after a very close encounter with their opposites.
“President Anne and the executive would like to thank the host venues, Pottsville and Ocean Shores Women’s Bowling Clubs, for the wonderful hospitality and friendship offered to southern competitors and all the wonderful supporters who attended this major event.”
She said Tweed Byron still had a couple of major events coming up including the District Delegate’s Meeting on 24 June at Condong B.C.
Morning tea at 8.30am with meeting to commence at 9am.
On 8 July the District President’s Triples will be held at Brunswick Heads.
