Everything from bus trips to art classes and movie festivals are on the program for this year’s Tweed Seniors Week.
The week will officially launch with an opening ceremony and awards presentation at the Banora Point Community Centre on Sunday from 2pm-4pm.
The event is all about new experiences and getting out and having fun, for the community’s older members.
Down at the Pottsville Beach Neighbourhood Centre they will celebrate the 2013 NSW Seniors Week by presenting three FREE morning sessions to acquaint seniors with smart phones and tablets.
Organiser Drew Stevenson has designed Computer In Your Pocket, an innovative program which guides seniors painlessly through the use of smart phones and tablets (ie iPads etc), with other topics also covered, such as safe practices in social networking and information technology.
The language will be explained and participants will be guided in the use of touch screens and navigating and manipulating onscreen data.
Drew said many older residents were receiving smart phones and tablets as “hand-me-downs” from their kids and grandchildren, as the younger members of the family moved to up-grade.
He said the centre had originally planned to have a smart phone and tablet course for younger members of the community but had received a lot of enquiries from those 55-plus. Drew said they were easy to use and transport and, as the type size could be made bigger or smaller, they were perfect for reading the newspaper or a book on.
The course, Computer in Your Pocket, will be held from 10am to noon on March 18, 19, 20 at the Neighbourhood Centre, Pottsville, 12A Elizabeth Street, Pottsville. Contact the centre for details.
NSW Seniors Week celebrates 55 years in 2013. This year NSW Seniors Week runs from March 17 – 24.
With over 900 events planned under the Live Life! theme, it is the biggest celebration for seniors in the southern hemisphere.
NSW Seniors Week is a State Government campaign organised by Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC). It provides seniors with opportunities to be active and healthy; independent and socially connected; and recognised for their community involvement.
