Nationals candidate for Richmond, Matthew Fraser, joined the Tweed Heads Relay for Life team, ‘Tweed an Sour’, at the Ivory Tavern last Sunday to support the team’s fundraising efforts on behalf of the Cancer Council.
Relay for Life is an annual fundraising event during which teams of 10 to 15 members complete a relay walk of up to 24 hours.
Surrounding the event, a number of ceremonies are held to honour and remember those who lost their lives to cancer.
Tweed an Sour coordinator Val Quinn and her team-mates aim to raise $2000 and are well on their way to reach that target.
“We have already raised around $1200 through a food hamper raffle and last Sunday’s cocktail party at the Ivory,” Val said.
“In the lead-up to the actual relay walk at Cudgen Leagues Club, we will hold some more fundraising events to make sure we reach our target.
Tweed an Sour team members will complete their walk on March 23 and 24 and, during the evening hours, will light a number of paper ‘hope bags’ containing sand and a tea light, placed around the oval.
Mrs Quinn said last year the 24 Tweed-based teams which entered managed to raise in excess of $60,000.
Apart from supporting the Tweed an Sour team’s efforts, Matthew Fraser will raise funds for the cause with his own team, the ‘Plumb Jet Good Guys’ team formed by Good Guys Tweed South owner Rory Curtis.
Mr Fraser said, “The Cancer Council provides support groups, accommodation, trans-port and many other vital services to people with cancer.
“The council funds more research than any other charity in the State and gives people one of the most important and valuable aspects; hope.
“A lot has already been achieved but, to produce the break-throughs necessary to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatments, we need to continue and if possible lift our efforts,” Mr Fraser said.
