Susie Dunn has been named Tweed Woman of the Year at the annual Tweed Valley Women’s Service Wonders of Women Awards at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club on Thursday evening.
It was a popular win, with the crowd of more than 100 people erupting into applause when her name was announced at the colourful Carnivale themed ceremony.
Susie is the go-to-girl at the Tweed Community Health Centre where she is employed as a community midwife working in the home visiting postnatal area.Her incredible knowledge of mother care, her expertise and unique care explifies her extraordinary gifts in guiding and helping new mothers. She is also involved in educating other nurses and midwives. Last year she undertook an amazing undertook a 24-hour walk to raise money and awareness for Birthing Kits for third world countries, working with Southern Gold Coast Zonta.
An emotional Susie thanked the women’s service and everyone who supported her in her walk last year, particularly Zonta.
“I had to do it because there were too many people I would let down,” she said tearfully.
“But I’m not going to do it in a hurry again. It took about a week for my feet to recover and months for my legs to recover, but thanks to every one,” the popular winner added.
Other winners included Community Supporters and Volunteers – Dorothy Elliott of You Have a Friend, Youth and Children – Jan Cronley; health and Disability – paramedic and St John Ambulance Service officer Sally Quinn; Creative Arts – Murwillumbah Philhar-monic Choir musical director Heather Martin; Indigenous and Culture Cheva Weatherall who has been an incredible driver in establishing and developing services for indigenous people across the Tweed and Gold Coast; Emergency – Glenda Ashby of Point Danger marine Rescue Service; Young Woman of The Year – Penelope Meeves and Team/Service of the Year – Dragons Abreast Mount Warning.
The awards are now in their sixth year and recognise the efforts of women – many working behind the scenes – across the Tweed Valley.
