This week is wet and wild and watery on the Tweed and we aren’t talking about the weather.
The 11th annual Tweed River Festival is well underway again, with events across the Tweed highlighting the region’s beautiful waterways and culminating in the famous Kids In Need Dragon Boat Race at Jack Evans Boat Harbour on Sunday morning.
In fact the award winning Boat Harbour at Tweed Heads is the focus of a couple of events, including the main day activities on Saturday, November 17. The day will feature the annual lantern parade and fireworks.
However, there are many more activities to enjoy during Tweed River Festival Week leading up to the main day event, with the festival aiming to raise awareness in the community about the importance of our waterways to our lives and our lifestyles.
Tweed residents are being urged to get out and active on one of Tweed’s beautiful waterways on a kayak or stand-up paddle board.
The annual Tweed Catchment Catch-up will be held on Friday, November 16 at the Pottsville Bicentennial Gardens in Centennial Drive from 9am to 3pm. It’s an opportunity for residents to learn about projects which protect and enhance the natural resources of the Tweed Valley. The event is free, however numbers are limited. To register, please call Council on (02) 6670 2400 or 1300 292 872.
Then head down to the harbour on Saturday from 3.30pm (DST) for the main day of the Tweed River Festival, featuring children’s activities, live music, fabulous food and information stalls. You may even want to decorate a lantern and carry it in the parade yourself.
At dusk (around 7.30pm), the festival’s fabulous lantern parade will light up the river with hundreds of luminous lanterns on and around the water. The parade will finish with a dazzling fireworks display over Jack Evans Boat Harbour.
For more information or to register to carry one of the iconic parade lanterns or paddle your lantern-lit canoe in the parade, contact Tweed Shire Council on 02 6670 2400 or 1300 292 872. The full Tweed River Festival program is available on Council’s website www.tweed.nsw.gov.au under ‘Coming Events’.
