Workmen have been hard at work repairing and preparing the erosion ravaged land in front of the Cudgen Headland Surf Life Club ahead of next month’s NSW Surf Lifesaving titles.
“There has been a few sink holes appear at the back of the sea wall in front of the surf club caused by water rushing in between a small gap in some of the concrete piles and then sucking sand back out through the hole,” Surf Life saving club president Adam Mills said.
“The council are filling these holes with concrete to close the gaps and then they will be building a new fence on top of the sea wall and reinstating the turf in time for the State titles.”
A council spokesperson said the original contractor for the vertical piled wall in from the of the club returned to fill the gaps between the vertical piles which was allowing some sand to come through on the club side.
She said the contractor was pumping grout down to fill the holes. The work was due to be completed this week.
She said the temporary fence in front of the club would also be removed in the next few weeks, to be replaced with a more permanent fence.
Meanwhile Adam said preparations are well under-way for the State titles. He said the State centre was committed to Kingscliff, however a contingency plan has been prepared for either Fingal or Pottsville.
Volunteers are still needed to help out for the event which will include the junior and senior titles.
“We have had some more volunteers come forward but will need some more,” Adam added.
“One of the main weekends for setting the carnival up is February 25 and 26 which is also the weekend that the FNC branch changed their nipper branch titles too, due to poor quality of water when previously scheduled. This will reduce available volunteer member base on this weekend.”
