Brindabella Airlines commenced direct services between Armidale and Brisbane on Monday.
In a flying visit to Armidale in the lead-up to the first flight, Brindabella CEO, Jeff Boyd, launched the new service and networked at an Armidale Chamber of Commerce function in The Armidale School’s Hoskins Centre.
Mr Boyd and his Chief Operating Officer, Nicole Masters, had an intensive Armidale visit. They met with key business sector, Armidale Dumaresq Council and University of New England representatives.
Initially, there will be one flight per week-day but the plans are to increase this to two flights and also to include weekend flights.
From the outset, two aircraft models will be used on the service.
Regional development advocate, Don Tydd, worked with Brindabella, assessing demand in Armidale and the wider New England area, then assisting the airline in building local connections (with public and private organisations), as well as individuals.
Mr Tydd said it is critical that the re-establishment of an air service to the north from Armidale be supported.
“With support, more services will become available,” he said.
Ultimately, it is hoped that morning and late afternoon flights will eventuate, suiting business needs.
Jeff Boyd explained that, as soon as a regular demand has been demonstrated, then Brindabella will add more services. He added that, as opposed to Sydney, the airline does not need to fight for slots at Brisbane airport.
Brindabella will be adding about $6/ticket at the start of next year.
Prospective passengers are reminded that Brindabella Airlines is a Qantas affiliate airline and passengers travelling with Brindabella can earn and redeem Frequent Flyer points.
