Armidale Garden Club turns 50

Founding member Beth Williams, President Joan Monty and Secretary Tricia Moore admire Tricia’s beautiful White Wisteria.
2012 marks 50 years for the Armidale Garden Club and, to celebrate, they will be having an anniversary luncheon and garden tour on Saturday, October 27, the very day the club held its inaugural meeting in 1962 under the sponsorship of the Armidale Improvement and Beautification Committee. Some forty names were recorded as foundation members.
For fifty years, the Armidale Garden Club has provided a forum for local gardeners of all ages and gardening experience to exchange views and gardening successes, to trade plants and shrubs and to seek advice on many and varied aspects of gardening. The Club holds regular monthly meetings, with knowledgeable gardeners and other practitioners as guest speakers
The celebrations will comprise an Anniversary Garden Tour and Luncheon. Visits have been organised to three historically interesting local gardens, followed by a special luncheon at Saumarez Homestead. At the conclusion of the lunch there will be viewing of Miss White’s garden.
“At the luncheon will be founding member Beth Williams, who was a Botanist at UNE for over 50 years,” said President Joan Monty.
“Our club is all about learning from other people in the club and every week we have a section on problems that people are having in their garden or with a particular plant.
“Our members have a wealth of knowledge about gardening in this climate that is so valuable if you are just starting out in gardening or are new to the area.
“We have around 25 members and meet on the fourth Thursday of the month in the Uniting Church Hall at 7.30pm.”
Present and past members of the Armidale Garden Club and interested gardeners are invited to participate in this milestone event. For further details contact the President, Mrs Joan Monty 6772 7049 or the Secretary, Mrs Tricia Moore 0438 721 429 before October 18. Numbers are limited.
