THE Ascent Group is teaming up with Northern Links Inc. to provide a unique workshop entitled See Me – Hear Me designed to empower carers ahead of the big changes coming to disability funding and organisations.
This training follows the introduction of DisabilityCare Australia and addresses the coming amendments to the NSW Disability Services Act.
The workshop will introduce carers to the principles of person-centred planning and approaches and give them the skills to design and write a one-page profile for their loved one.
The Ascent Group CEO Kevin Mead said the workshop will be held at the Powerhouse Hotel on Friday 26 July. Lunch and materials will be provided.
“Person Centredness is not the latest fad,” Mr Mead said.
“It places the person with a disability or illness at the centre of service provision and enables them to be seen first as an individual person with likes and dislikes, dreams and wishes, just like us.”
It is expected that Person Centredness will carry the force of legislation in NSW following proposed amendments to the Disability Services Act.
Northern Links Inc, a leading community development organisation based in Armidale, has already conducted similar workshops and is pleased to do so in Armidale.
“Northern Links is committed to the principles and practise of Person Centredness,” Wendy LeBlanc, Co-ordinator of Northern Links said.
“It presents people and their carers first and breaks the current focus on disability and difference.
“We want carers to have the skills and confidence to take advantage of person-centred approaches and be the drivers of real change in the lives of their loved ones.”
The See Me – Hear Me workshop is designed for those who are parents or full-time carers of a person with disability or mental illness.
“These are the people who know the person best and love them unconditionally and so are the best people to drive person-centred planning.”
