New country and new skills

Kingscliff TAFE student Arsella Weatherall is enjoying life in Australia with new friends, new skills, a new attitude and a whole new set of goals.
Arsella who arrived in this country from the Philippines in 2009 started a Certificate III in English in 2010 and in 2011 went on to complete a Skillmax course.
The Skillmax course included English language support, strategies to identify employment opportunities, preparation for job interviews, career management skills and developing a greater awareness of workplace culture and trends in the Australian labour market.
Through Skillmax Arsella was able to undertake 30 hours of work experience and develop a career portfolio that includes a résumé and cover letters. “Skillmax gave me the confidence to get back into the work force and also gave me the ambition and skills to tackle further study to realise my ultimate goals”, Arsella said.
Arsella is now studying a Certificate III in Business Administration and plans to undertake a certificate IV in OH&S. Her eventual aim is to work in administration in the construction industry with her husband.
While studying at Kingscliff TAFE Arsella has made a great number of friends and continues to enjoy the student life.
“I have met many people at TAFE and made a lot of good friends. The teachers have also helped me with not just English but understanding Australian customs and culture.”
Skillmax is for skilled migrants seeking employment in their chosen profession. It is a fast track course to prepare qualified professionals to enter the Australian workforce, it is funded by the NSW Government and is free for eligible participants.
Skillmax is being offered at Kingscliff TAFE starting April 26 2012 to June 29 2012 every Thursday and Friday from 9am to 3pm.
