The Armidale Waldorf School’s commitment to teaching children about organic farming has been recognised by national body the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA).
The Armidale Waldorf School was one of only ten Australian primary schools recognised by the BFA Organic School Gardens Leader Schools Program, introduced in May 2010. The project provides assistance to primary schools leading the way in the development of their organic school garden programs.
The Leader Schools initiative recognises and rewards schools whose gardening program and commitment to its development are outstanding.
The Armidale Waldorf School’s education administrator Gaynor McGrath said it was a great privilege to receive the recognition and assistance provided under the program, and a fabulous opportunity for the students.
“The Armidale Waldorf School has a Food Garden which uses organic and biodynamic practices and is the focus for fortnightly lessons for each class, in which children begin to develop their understanding of chemical-free and soil-building food production practices,” said Gaynor McGrath.
On Saturday, October 22, during the SLEX Weekend, The Armidale Waldorf School will be holding an Open Day and Sustainable Education Tour so you can see a sustainable education in action.
There will be tours of The Armidale Waldorf School vegetable garden and reed bed systems, as well as walking through the grounds. During the afternoon, John Craven will be holding a talk about the School’s wastewater reed bed systems.
There is a full day of activities planned, starting at 10.30am with a story in the Kindergarten. At 11am and 1pm children and adults can come into the Playtime area at the school and make Biodynamic buns and then enjoy them with butter when they come out of the oven.
At 11.30 there is a choice of three workshops for visitors to enjoy, to experience some of the activities provided at The Armidale Waldorf School. Numbers for the workshops are limited, so please ring ahead if you don’t want to miss out.
The Armidale Waldorf School P&F will be selling tea, coffee and cakes, so come along and enjoy a bite or bring a picnic along and make use of the beautiful grounds.
