IT’s not every day you get the chance to play in front of more than 50,000 people but that’s just what Kingscliff Primary School’s Sevens Rugby side did in Sydney last week.
The boys played the plate final of the Primary School Sports Association Rugby Sevens state tournament as the warm-up for the Waratah’s-British Lions game at Allianz Stadium.
Not only did they play in the game but they came away with the silverware.
The team had played a number of knockout carnivals to make it through as the North Coast representative school.
The lads went to Sydney during the week to play the tournament at Narrabeen qualifying for the plate final.
All of the players, with the exception of Sam Delaney, play with Casuarina Beach Junior Rugby and with Rugby Sevens now an Olympic sport, and will no doubt be considering a very real opportunity to become future Olympians.
Meanwhile a number of the boys, playing for Casuarina at the weekend, have been selected in the Far North Coast Team to trial for North Coast representative honours.
Players making it through to the next stage are Daniel Chugg, Zac Hannah, Fraser Carpenter, Koro Whakaera, Gus Brown and Kingscliff primary captain Jessie Grey.
Rounding off a huge week for the Casuarina players was the official jersey sponsors day at Casuarina at the weekend. This season’s jersey sponsors, Tom Ray and Kane McDonald, turned out to see the Casuarina Barbarians go around in their new playing kit.
Tom Ray from the Salt Bar (blue and red jersey) and Kane McDonald from Penguin Concrete Construction (Black Cap) were delighted with the new look and it was a fantastic day of home ground Rugby.Salt Bar and Penguin Concrete are joint sponsors for the 2013 and 2014 season and both are very supportive of grass roots, community Rugby.
The competition heads into a two week break before the final five rounds of competition are played.
The U13 and U14 lads are currently trialling for Gold Coast District Representative selections to play at the QLD State Championships in September.
