Carers central to change

THE Ascent Group is teaming up with Northern Links NSW Inc. to provide a workshop designed to empower carers for the big ‘person centred’ changes which are coming to disability funding and organisations.
The workshop will introduce carers to the principles of Person Centred Planning and approaches and give them the skills to design and write a one-page profile for their loved one.
The workshop will be held at the Powerhouse Hotel on Friday 28 June. Lunch and materials will be provided.
The Ascent Group CEO Kevin Mead said “Person Centredness was not the latest fad”.
“It places the person with a disability or illness at the centre of service provision and enables them to be seen first as an individual person with likes and dislikes, dreams and wishes, just like anyone else,” Mr Mead said.
It is expected that Person Centredness will carry the force of legislation in NSW following proposed amendments to the Disability Services Act.
The ‘See Me – Hear Me’ Workshop is designed for those who are parents or full time carers of a person with disability or mental illness.
“We want carers to have the skills and confidence to take advantage of person-centred approaches and be the drivers of real change in the lives of their loved ones.”
There are still some places available for the Armidale workshop. Any parent or carer wishing to attend is urged to contact Kate or Wendy at the Northern Links office on 6771 3236.
