Cooly Rocked, but Greece is the word now

By TANIA PHILLIPS

TOO much Cooly Rocks On is never enough and the Tweed Coast Weekly delves into our cache of pictures and comes up with some great images that missed the cut last week due to last minute space issues.
Research into visitation and the economic impact of Cooly Rocks On will be available within the next three weeks but organisers are still claiming the third running of the annual ’50s and ’60s nostalgia festival is the biggest one yet.
Cooly Rocks CEO Bob Newman is expecting some pretty big numbers with estimates of 80,000-100,000 people attending the 10-day event this year – despite threatening clouds and late showers on Saturday afternoon.
“We couldn’t be happier with the outcome this year, and overall, the weather played in our favour for the first time in three years. We had a little rain on Saturday afternoon but that failed to dampen the spirits of the fans, many of whom had travelled from around Australia and overseas to experience Cooly Rocks On,” Bob said.
And while the Southern Gold Coast and Tweed recover from Cooly Rocks – the northern end of the Coast is gearing up for another major event.
Greece will be the word for Gold Coasters next month but don’t expect slicked back hair and well-kept hotrods this time.
It’s almost time for the biennial Gold Coast Greek Festival which return to Evandale Park on Sunday 14 July for its 11th year of cross-cultural celebration.
Established as one of Gold Coast’s largest community events, the Gold Coast Greek Festival showcases the vibrant Greek culture at its best and attracts over thousands of food-lovers and festival goers each year.
Hosted once again by the Gold Coast Greek Community, this year’s Gold Coast Greek Festival will see Evandale Parklands turn Greek on Sunday 14 July – as patrons can enjoy the delectable aromas and tastes of authentic Greek cooking, coupled with non-stop entertainment and activities running all day, from 9.30am to 5pm.
Attracting a record crowd at the 2011 GreekFest, the Gold Coast Greek Community will also have extra volunteers on hand as well as additional food stalls to cater for the growing number of festival goers at this year’s event.
