Girls’ day out

Women have dominated the Armidale Cup Carnival, with trainer Bindi Cheers leading the charge with her horse Zippy Zariz taking the $30,000 2012 Tooheys New Armidale Cup, ridden by young jockey Jessica Drury. The three favourites finished strongly with Zippy Zaris narrowly taking the win from Kwilas Law in second place and Dustys Felt in third.
The results for the women were outstanding across the whole day, with Bindi Cheers finishing with two wins, trainer Jane Clement from Moonbi also with two wins, jockey Rachel Murray rode two winners as did Cup winning jockey Jessica Drury.
“It was a girls’ day out really with plenty of females in the winner’s circle,” Armidale Jockey Club Secretary, Jim Dedes said.
“It was a great finish to the 2012 Tooheys New Armidale Cup with three of the favourites coming across the line together.”
Trainer Bindi Cheers from Taree has been training horses for around seven years and loves coming to Armidale for the Cup.
“We have had a wonderful day and the weather held off which was great.
“It was a beautiful ride by Jess, it was out the back at the right time and up the front at the right time, you couldn’t ask for more,” Bindi said.
Luckily for the Armidale Jockey Club, the weather held out all day and the course was looking the best it had been for many years.
“We have had a great season of racing here in Armidale with the weather also being kind to us,” said Jim Dedes.
“Even though it has been a bit overcast it has been a great day with everyone enjoying the racing.”
Hanna’s Fashions in the Field drew a large field of stunning finalists with Naomi Davidson runner up and Karen Burns winning. Alex McClenaghan won in the men’s.
