It’s all go on and off the green

Things are hotting up off at Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club, both on and off the greens, with two of the club’s groups heading for busy months.
At Kingscliff Beach Bowls Club, the bowlers share their facilities with a group you might not normally associate with the sport.
Every Wednesday night, after bowls has ended for the day, a huge sound thumps from the function room as the Samba-Blissta drum group get in some practice.
It’s the exciting drumming rythms and routines that the Kingscliff contingent of the Famous Samba-Blisstas are working on every week now, leading up to one of their biggest events to date.
In fac,t both the bowlers and the drummers are in for a busy few weeks.
This week the Samba-Blisstas officially open the third Annual Surfers Paradise Festival with a Gala Parade consisting of over 1500 participants, finishing on the foreshore with their finale stage show. Then in July, they will be at Splendour in the Grass. Later in the year, one of the feature acts at the Kirra Festival etc, etc .If you would like to see the Samba-Blisstas in action, check out their Events page @carnavaldrumming.com
Meanwhile, the bowls becomes serious with the club showcasing one of their prestigious bowling events, with the 2012 Schweppes Open Pairs Tournament to be played from Sunday, July 29 to Wednesday, August 1.
The Club has brought Schweppes as the major sponsor of this popular tournament for the next five years for the event, while Aero Bowls has also combined to become a long-term sponsor for the next three years and is contributing six teams of top class bowlers who will all be using the new Aero Bowls.
In 2011, John Green from Corrimal and Max Jaffray from South Tweed narrowly defeated the Kingscliff boys Michael Turner and Ian Taylor in a thrilling game, separated by just one shot at the end.
Previous winners have included Kelvin Kerkow and Sean Baker in 2010, the brothers Shane and Jay Globits in 2009 and Kelvin Kerkow and Sally Hickman in 2008.
This tournament has proven to be very popular since it replaced the Kingscliff Invitational Pairs in 2007.
With $15,000 in prize money, it is one of the richest tournaments on the local bowling calendar and it is no surprise that, once again, entries are filling fast, with a good line-up of bowlers already entered.
Entries need to be in without delay, as there have been full fields each year since the tournament began in 2007.
Nomination forms are available on the KBBC website or at the club’s reception on
6674 1404. Sectional play is held on Sunday and Monday and teams can nominate which day they wish to play their qualifying rounds.
Spectators will be rewarded with some excellent and exciting bowls over the four days and are most welcome .
And if you’re not into bowls, the most amazing thing about the very unique Samba-Blisstas is that, if you have the desire to drum and become a performer, you too can jump in any Wednesday and be trained as a Samba-Blissta!
Get in now and you will be added to the growing list of people from the whole region, including the Gold Coast, who are getting prepared for the Samba-Blisstas’ 10th Anniversary year in 2013 !
