Volunteers honoured as seniors week opens

Between them they have given more than 150 years of service to the Tweed community and on Sunday four local volunteers had all that hard work recognised.
Winifred Bruce, Ross Johnston, Eileen Bullen and Ruth Southon were the four major winners of this year’s senior’s week awards, announced during the opening ceremony on Sunday afternoon at the Lake Club, Noble Park, Kingscliff.
All four have volunteered at local groups around the Tweed from the local Tweed Hospital and church groups to surf lifesaving and everywhere in between.
Almost 200 people gathered to officially open this year’s Tweed Shire Seniors week celebrations and to recognise the volunteers.
The crowd was treated to performances by local Noble Park performers The Melody Makers lead by Geoff Dart. The performances included a medley of Abba songs as well as a performance
A large range of events have been held across the week from Family History days to Twilight Coastal Walks, bus tours and school concerts.
Still to come is an introduction to ebooks at Kingscliff Library today from 10am, Comedy with a Twist at the Banora Point Community Centre at 10am and Lindisfarne Grammar Anglican School Seniors Week Luncheon from 12.30. On Friday there will be an open day for seniors’ activities at Banora Point Community Centre while on Saturday a Bush Dance will be held at Tumbulgum Hall Riverside Drive, Tumbulgum.
The Closing Ceremony will be held at Mountain View Retirement Village in Murwillumbah on Sunday from 2pm.
