HUNDREDS of skaters carved it up at the official opening of the City’s newest $200,000 skate park revamp at Goodwin Park, Coolangatta at the weekend.
Demonstrations, competitions, retro dress and music were the order of the day at the community event.
Mayor Tom Tate said the City’s skate parks were valued community assets that provided a positive outlet for youthful energy and enthusiasm.
“The Coolangatta skate park has been upgraded at a cost of $200,000. This is a positive investment in the youth of our city,” he said.
“Many cities and regional towns boast world-class skate facilities but the City of Gold Coast is truly living up to its reputation as the top venue, per capita, in Australia.
“Our skate parks are fantastic places for everyone – from novices through to professionals, to come and practice their skills. And they encourage young people to get out, be active and connect with other members in the community.”
Division 14 Councillor, Chris Robbins said the skate park replaced an old facility built in 1998.
“It is a fantastic addition to Coolangatta and is already a hit with local young people keen to show off their skating skills, boasting a stack of obstacles that are unique.
In skate speak they include stencilled brick banks and ledges, a free-standing taco bank and a cantilevered brick stencilled hip bank. Pretty exciting stuff if you’re a skateboard enthusiast,” Cr Robbins said.
“I would like to thank the local community – skate park users, industry professionals, adjoining residents and local community service providers – who for many months were part of the consultation process to ensure we were on the right track to creating this wonderful facility.”
