Champion effort

When Paul Milner of Grill’d Burger Cafe at Coolangatta won the surf board auction at the Tweed Shire Kids in Community Awards back in September, little did he know that the board was about to take on special significance.

Just three months later, the man who donated the board to help the KIC awards, Coolangatta-Tweed local Joel Parkinson, surfed his way to a thrilling win in Hawaii and his first world championship and Paul’s $800 board probably jumped in value.

Not only that, but last week the newly-crowned World Champion, who starts his title defence at the Quiksilver Pro at Duranbah on March 2, was in Coolangatta to see the board and meet the new owner and some of the KIC committee members.

The auctioned board now has pride of place on Paul’s wall.

The awards, entering their fourth year on the Tweed, highlight the achievements, significant work and activities of young people in our community.
