The angelic voices of 900 students from Armidale and across the region will fill Lazenby Hall this Sunday, October 28 in two concerts presented by the New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM).
New England Sings! is a singing and orchestral extravaganza of unequalled proportion. It is a biennial event masterminded by NECOM and, going on its sensational success in 2010, this will be one of Armidale’s most significant musical events of 2012, especially as it presents two world premier performances.
The concerts at 11am and 2pm will feature a massed primary choir of 250, a secondary choir of 300, a 70-piece orchestra and outstanding group items, reaching a total of over 900 singers and musicians.
The massed secondary choir will be conducted by Australia’s internationally respected choral conductor Lyn Williams OAM, and will feature specially commissioned works from two of Australia’s up and coming composers.
The Primary massed choirs, conducted by highly skilled music educator Rowena Tall, will premiere the commission The Bird King by Dan Walker, based on the beautiful sketches of Shaun Tan, the Oscar winning Illustrator of the animated film The Lost Thing.
The showpiece of New England Sings! is the premiere of Joe Twist’s Dreamers of the Day by the combined primary and secondary choirs and orchestra.
Performances will also feature the Armidale Youth Orchestra, joined by community musicians and directed by AYO Chief Conductor Warwick Dunham. The finale will involve all singers and the huge orchestra — with three bagpipers added for good measure — to reprise the heart stirring You’re the Voice that brought the house down in NECOM’s 2010 New England Sings!
New England Sings! is proudly presented by the New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) in association with the Armidale Music Teachers Association, and with funding from Arts NSW.
