Students cook up a storm

They say an army marches on its stomach and so does an army  of volunteers, as those involved with this year’s NSW State Surf Life Saving titles have been finding out over the past two weeks
And amongst those in the thick of the action has been Cudgen Club member and teacher Cath Ord, who has been mobilising an army of volunteers to help with the catering of the events – including some of her students.
“I am a Hospitality Teacher at Mt St Patrick College Murwillumbah and I have, as a Cudgen Surf Club member and surf bronze holder,   been in charge of the catering of 100s of meals for officials on the beach,” she said.
“It his has been possible through the help of club and community member volunteers and my Year 11 Hospitality class.
“We have prepared and dispatched almost 4000 morning teas and lunches over the 1.2 kilometre stretch of carnival over the two weekends.
“I have had ten to twenty volunteers each day over the two long weekends,” Cath Ord said.
“The sort of meals we have been preparing – rolls – ham & salad; egg & salad; corn beef & salad
etc; quiche and salad; fruit salad packs; packaging morning teas – muffins or cake and fruit. “
She said it was valuable experience for the Year 11 students.
“What I think the kids got out of it was the opportunity to cater for large numbers of people under a tight time frame, the opportunity to be involved in an important local community event, the opportunity to witness firsthand and be involved in a large sporting event,” she said.
She said this year’s class included 17 students, with roughly half involved each Friday.
“Seven were involved on Friday the 11th and eight others were involved on Frdiay the 18th,” she said.
