Tweed Coasters have dominated this year’s Tweed Shire Australia Day Awards with our young sporting and academic all-rounders leading the way.Pottsville Year Six student, hockey player and champion Maths Olympian Rosie Kahl was named Young Achiever, while her School’s musical took out the Arts and Cultural Achievement Award. Another all-rounder Cabarita-based table tennis champion Kane Townsend, who was also Kingscliff High’s top student in last year’s HSC, took out the Individual Sporting Achievement Award. Kane, who finished school last year, will head to Sydney next month for an Olympic trial, along with his brother Wade.Kane’s fellow Kingscliff High students, the 4 x 50 metres Freestyle Relay Team of Blake Francis, Callum Smith, Christopher Walmsley and Oliver Illingworth were named the best team.The four boys won the NSW School CHS swimming relay title for five years running.The biggest awards of the year went to two quiet but dedicated achievers.Co-ordinator and founder of the not for profit group Twin Towns Friends Association, Doreen Welsh, is the 2011 Tweed Shire Citizen of the Year.Despite battling lung cancer and knee surgery, Doreen has continued to work tirelessly with the group that she founded in 1997 to address loneliness and isolation of older people in our community.Meanwhile, Tweed’s John Lee has been named Volunteer of the Year.John’s award recognises his role in setting up and co-ordinating the not for profit charity “You Have a Friend”, that offers support to the homeless and most needy in Coolangatta, Tweed Heads, Murwillumbah and Chinderah.John has been able to organise food goods generously donated by local businesses to be picked up, sorted and distributed during night outreach programs, food drops, Court support services and regular lunch and breakfasts held in a range of locations across the Shire.This year’s other winners include the Tweed Valley Equestrian Group – Power of Pink Dressage (Breast Cancer Fundraiser) which took out the Community Event of the Year while the Academic Achievement Award went to Claire Chauvier and Georgina Harbottle who tied Dux of Mt St Patrick’s College 2011.
