Bishop Michael Kennedy, from the Catholic Diocese of Armidale, has announced a review of the use of all the buildings in the Cathedral Precinct. This is the area bounded by Rusden, Jessie, Barney and Dangar Streets.
“On my arrival in Armidale, I learned that the Ursuline Sisters had recently moved out of the Convent,” said Bishop Kennedy.
“Given this significant change to the Cathedral Precinct, I decided it was an opportunity to take a fresh look at the use of all our buildings.”
Conservation and respect for the heritage of these iconic buildings is uppermost in the Bishop’s mind.
“On flying into Armidale the first time, I was struck by the outstanding heritage buildings including those surrounding the two Cathedrals,” said the Bishop.
“It is my wish that, over a period of years, we can restore the buildings and have them fully occupied and utilised by the Cathedral Parish, Armidale Diocese and its agencies.
“Whilst it was originally thought that the Catholic Schools Office may use the Ursuline Convent, I have engaged project consultants to advise me on the best possible way in which to revitalise the use of all the buildings.
“I have spoken with Armidale Dumaresq Council Mayor Peter Ducat and General Manager Shane Burns and am pleased with their enthusiasm towards this project. I look forward to working closely with council and their heritage advisors as I seek to preserve these buildings for use by many generations to come.”
This project comes as the Armidale Catholic Parish is preparing to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Cathedral.
