Every year for the past seven years, the members of the Fingal Rovers Surf Lifesaving Club have worked hard behind the scenes to help with the annual Twin Towns Services Runners and Walkers Club Fingal Fun Run.
The men and women of the tiny club have put in a lot of effort to ensure that everyone remains safe and has fun at the Good Friday event.
And every year they help the Runners Club raise money for a lot of local charities.
But this year is different; sure the day still includes events for everyone from under eights right up. It’s still a great family day and the Fingal Rovers are still helping out. But this year the Runners and Walkers Club and all the participants are giving back to the crew from Rovers.
“We have chosen Fingal Rovers as our charity this year,” run organiser Tony Kean said.
“They have given a lot of support to us over the years and we are going to help them in their hour of need.”
He said the surf club at Fingal was in need of urgent work and the money raised would go towards the much-needed renovations.
“A little club like Fingal doesn’t have poker machines and dining facilities like the big Queensland clubs,” he said.
“But they work hard and have saved quite a few people over
the years.”
And so now their friends are giving back to ensure the club still has headquarters to operate from.
The event will take place on Good Friday at low tide (Good Friday was chosen because it follows the moon cycle and always has a low tide at a suitable time for a beach run).
Entries open at 1pm, with the 500m fun run/walk for the eights and under due to start by 2.30pm. The day also includes a 500metre event for nine-10 years, a 3km event primarily suited to the 11 to 15 years (although walkers are also invited for this distance) and a six kilometre race for age groups 16 and over – either running or walking the distance.
There will be awards for overall winners as well as a large number of random draw prizes. Entry fee is $35 for families, $15 for adults and $5 for children under 18.
There will be ample parking, with the Fingal Public School opening its grounds on the day – the $3 parking fee goes directly to the school’s P&C.
