They may call themselves Old Bastards but a lot of charities around the Tweed believe the members of the Australiasian Order of Old Bastards – Twin Towns division – are more like “old softies”.
The group has been going since 1993 and since that time they have donated an amazing $200,000 to a lot of local charities and groups as well as sending $400 a year to Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney.
That’s not bad for a group who raise the vast majority of their money through raffles, with events like a Christmas Wrapping service and bowls days also being used in the past as fundraisers.
Last week the group, led by president Barry Rigney, dropped in on the Tweed Valley Early Childhood Intervention Service (Inc) to donate $1000 to
the cause.
TVECIS Director and teacher Judith Terkelsen said the money would be used for the group’s visual supports project.
This project focuses on the provision of visual supports for children who require augmentative/alternative communication systems, social stories and/or visual cues/timetables to support the child’s communication across multiple environments. Visual supports can help a child understand different kids’ information.
Stopping in for a cuppa, Barry, group secretary Jenny Alder and committee member Jessie Rigney, were also shown the TVEIS lastest project – their website. The site www.tvecis.com.au outlines all of their services as well as mentioning the group’s corporate sponsors and community heroes (like
the Order).
