Holiday park saves water

One of the Tweed’s top 20 water users will greatly reduce their use, with the assistance of Tweed Shire Council.
The BIG4 Tweed Billabong Holiday Park is looking to save thousands of litres every year, following the replacement of old single flush toilets with new four-star WELS rated dual flush toilets.
Old single flush toilets use an average of 11 litres per flush while the new 4-star WELS rated dual flush toilets use only 3 litres per half flush and 4.5 litres for every full flush, reducing the overall water use by about a third.
The park was identified as one of the shire’s top 20 non-residential water users, qualifying it for financial assistance to install water saving devices through Tweed’s Top 20 Water Saving Program.
Other Top 20 participants have included the shire’s biggest clubs, shopping centres, hospitals, aged care facilities and caravan/holiday parks.
Tweed Shire Council is working in partnership with high water use businesses in the shire, helping them to adopt more efficient water use practices.
Participating businesses receive assistance to implement a water saving project, including a free water assessment, support, promotion opportunities and financial assistance of up to $5000.
The park, located in Holden Street, West Tweed, used the assistance to replace nine single flush (11 litre) toilets with new dual flush (3/4.5 litre) toilet suites.
Managers Rachael and Kieran Griffin said they were keen to reduce their water use.
“By cutting our water use, we automatically reduced our water, sewer, liquid trade waste and power bills and are helping to protect our environment,” Ms Griffin said.
“All of our cabins and amenities blocks have now been fitted with dual flush toilets and this recent work is part of an ongoing push to continue to reduce the park’s water use.
“By using water efficient products and making some simple changes to our water use behaviours, thousands of litres of water can be saved,” Mr Griffin added.
Other businesses across the region have already signed up and are reaping the benefits.
Council will shortly be introducing the Tweed’s Top 100 water saving program for other high non-residential water users.
This will target large businesses and organisations such as clubs, shopping complexes, schools, industry, factory unit complexes, hotels/motels and other accommodation premises.
Keep an eye out in the Tweed Link for details of this new program which will offer participating businesses and other organisations up to $1000 assistance towards water saving projects.
Invitations will be sent out to the Top 100 water users in the coming weeks.
