The Armidale Farmers’ Market is in full swing and organiser Robert Gasparre couldn’t be happier with the growth of fresh produce being sold.
New stallholders, Kim and Angus Deans, are selling garlic grown at their property, The Oasis Biodymanic Farm, at Tingha. They have been growing garlic for their own use for a few years now and this year they are able to share the wonderful joy of fresh Australian garlic further afield. They will come to the market until they sell out of this year’s crop.
“Not too many people seem game enough to purchase their garlic in bulk, even those who use it a lot,” Kim and Angus said.
“People aren’t really accustomed to storing food for any period of time and seem trained by the supermarkets to buy small amounts frequently.
“If you enjoy good garlic the problem with this approach is that the supply of fresh local garlic will soon dry up and you will be left with the only option being spongy poor quality garlic for the rest of the year.
“If you buy in bulk and store your garlic well it will keep for many months and reward you well for your forward planning.”
You can buy garlic braids at the stall and Kim and Angus can advise you of the best way to store your garlic.
Also coming to the next market is David and Suveda Hardwick. They are planning to have some fresh organic bread (sour doughs and slow ferment). They are teaming up with some other small local producers and will also have new season organic potatoes and organic eggs from Guyra.
The Armidale Farmers’ Market and Car Boot Sale is held on the first and third Sunday of every month in Curtis Park. For more information contact Robert Gasparre on 0414 478 308 or visit www.armidalemarket.com
