SOUTHERN Gold Coast Beaches have dominated the Keep Queensland Beautiful Clean Beaches Competition for 2012-’13.
Currumbin was named Queensland’s Cleanest Beach while Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, Kirra and Burleigh also featured in the awards announced at Currumbin on Friday.
The awards mean that Southern Gold Coast Tweed have now dominated Clean Beach titles on both sides of the border in the past two years.
Maggies Beach at Bogangar took out the NSW Cleanest Beach award two years ago while beaches at Bogangar, Fingal and Hastings Point were award winners in the NSW awards last year.
Gold Coast beaches were presented with nine awards with Currumbin featuring in six of the other eight categories announced.
Friends of Currumbin, Currumbin Surf Lifesaving Club and Griffith Centre for Coastal Management ‘s BeachCare program accepted the award for Currumbin Beach as Queensland’s Cleanest Beach.
Member for Currumbin and Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey MP said Currumbin residents had long been aware how spectacular our beaches were and it was fitting this beach was recognised with this state-wide award.
“Currumbin Vikings SLSC, Friends of Currumbin, and members of the community are to be commended for the diligence and pride they display in keeping our foreshores in perfect condition.
“On the southern Gold Coast we are blessed with a string of stunning beaches that attract visitors from near and far.”
Currumbin will now contest the National Keep Australia Beautiful beaches award.
Previous Cleanest Beaches wins for the Gold Coast included Palm Beach 1999 and 2000, Surfers Paradise 2005, and Tallebudgera Beach 2010-’11, which won the overall national competition as well.
