Youth day for skate park

By TANIA PHILLIPS

COME and have your say on the draft plan for the Knox Park Youth Precinct in Murwillumbah at a youth event on Saturday (3 August) from 11am to 3pm at Knox Park in Murwillumbah.

The draft Youth Precinct Plan will be on display as well as the broader draft Knox Park Master Plan as part of a youth day at the park on Saturday.
Activities will include youth service displays, entertainment, a barbecue, Sumo suits, Slackline and demos from Skateboarding Australia.
The Murwillumbah Youth Centre will also be open for the community to take a look through. The youth event is part of Local Government Week activities – see the full program at www.tweed.nsw.gov.au
Knox Park is to receive a major makeover in the next few years, following the success earlier this year of an application by council for funding for a youth precinct through the Regional Development Australia Fund – Round Three (Supporting Small Towns).
Council will receive $500,000 for the project from the Regional Development Australia Fund, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by council.
The project is the development of a dedicated public youth space, for unstructured recreational, social and leisure activities, which will incorporate a plaza-style skate and scooter area and adventure playground for young people and families.
The existing dated skate park and play equipment will be replaced with a ‘best practice’ plaza-style skate/scooter precinct and adventure playground with cutting-edge design features to encourage participation by a range of young people and families.
“An integrated youth space will be designed, managed and activated by young people and the local community which will cater to young people’s daily social needs, with the capacity to cater for local skate events and youth-related programs,” council’s Community Development Officer – Youth, Sylvia Roylance, said.
As part of the consultation on the design of the new facility, 15 young people aged 15 to 22 recently took part in a tour of four Gold Coast skate parks at Coolangatta, Varsity Lakes, Miami and Nerang.
The young skaters will be on-hand on Saturday to give their opinions and thoughts after their tour.
