Relay for Life returns to Tweed in March

The inspirational Relay For Life is back on the Tweed after a break of several years and this time it will be held at the Recreation Street Reserve, next to the PCYC in Tweed on Saturday and Sunday, March 11 and 13.
Relay For Life is an overnight, community event where teams of 10-15 participate in a relay-style walk or run to raise funds for Cancer Council.
The event brings the whole community together for a night of fun, entertainment, celebration and remembrance. Each Relay For Life event is organised by a local volunteer organising committee on behalf of Cancer Council.
Right now the relay is looking for teams to take part in the event, organised by Cancer Council NSW, which will raise money for the Tweed Hospital.
Relay For Life is aimed at raising money for the fight against cancer, supporting individuals and their families and friends in their cancer journey, and providing opportunities to educate the community about ways to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
Cancer can affect you, your family, friends, employees, customers or business acquaintances. It is estimated that one in two men and one in three women in Australia will be diagnosed with cancer before they reach the age of 85. In the Far North Coast region alone approximately 1800 people are diagnosed with cancer each year and sadly of this figure as many as 650 people will not survive their cancer journey.
Cancer Council NSW aims to defeat cancer by investing wisely in cancer research (over $16 million was provided for research in 2011); providing support, information and advice to cancer patients and their families; promoting cancer prevention messages to the community and advocating for improved cancer services and prevention campaigns on behalf of others.
The Cancer Council is looking for local businesses to support us by registering a team or financial or product donations.
Product donations will be used as raffle prizes and as prizes at pre-event fundraising activities. During the event they will also be used as incentives for participants to keep on walking, and as prizes to reward teams and participants for their efforts.
Organisers are also seeking sponsorship of parts of the event, such as staging, sound and lighting and fireworks. Further details of sponsorship packages and benefits can be provided if you are interested.
If you’d like to donate goods, services or financial support, then please contact the committee by phone on
(02) 6627 0302 or via email at rhianp@nswcc.org.au
In NSW around 40,000 people each year take part in Relay For Life.
The event is not just about the amazing experience of spending the weekend with people from your local community. It’s also about the fun ways your team can raise money in the lead up to the day. Relays are truly amazing occasions where tears are shed, hopes are raised, fun is had and friendships are forged.
Some people do it in memory of a loved one who has passed away from cancer.
Some people do it to show how proud they are at having survived cancer.
Some use it to show they are strong enough to beat cancer. And some just want to be involved and make a difference.
The event is open to everyone! There are no restrictions when it comes to Relay. It’s about getting involved, regardless of your motivation and being part of something great. Usually teams are made up of 10 to 15 people and headed up by a team captain. You don’t have to be over 18 to get involved and you don’t have to be fit – anyone can do it!
