Unit block development withdrawn

A controversial development application to build a 23-unit block in Church Lane, Murwillumbah, was withdrawn late last week according to Tweed shire mayor Cr Barry Longland.
He said, while the applicant still owns the land, he made the decision to withdraw the DA.
The DA had drawn wide criticism from the local community and council candidates.
Tweed Labor council candidates were quick to congratulate the community for their efforts which, they said, “led to the withdrawal of the controversial development application”.
Candidate Michael Armstrong said that he welcomed the decision by the developer to withdraw their application given the community had voiced such strong concerns:
“When we met with the local community last weekend, there was overwhelming opposition to this type of medium housing development,” he said.
“There is a role for medium density housing but such developments need to reflect the needs of local residents.
“To ignore the wishes of locals jeopardises the merit of these types of applications,” said Mr Armstrong.
