Tweed Tennis by Peter Luc
WITH many tournaments on offer over the holidays, a number of players headed on their annual Rocky/Bundy tour run by Ryan Kebblewhite (Sonic Pottsville/Palm Beach) and came away with a number of trophies again.
Locally, plenty of Tweed District juniors from various clubs headed to the Miami OJT with some younger juniors experiencing their first Tennis Australia’s junior tournament. Many juniors performed well.
A highlight of the tournament was the under-16 boys singles final, in which two Tweed District juniors made the final for consecutive years. Last year, Cody Atkinson beat Aaron Westerlund in a third-set tiebreak. This year, with the boys head-to-head at 1-1, number one seed Aaron Westerlund and number two seed Cody Atkinson put on another stellar final with it going into a third-set decider. Cody won the match to claim the title for consecutive years.
Aaron recently jumped his ranking to 206 in Australia which is a fantastic achievement for the 16 year old. Cody’s ranking has also jumped in recent months to the mid 300s.
The Tweed District Junior AGM was held last week. With the committee numbers growing again this year, a big thanks goes out to the existing and new parents who have volunteered their time to help junior tennis over the next 12 months.
