SOME of the best and most beautiful blooms on the Tweed go on display at the Tweed District Shopping Centre Spring Show outside Coles in Tweed City Shopping Centre from 10-12 October.
The display, put on by the Tweed District Orchid Society, will be open from 8am to 9pm on Thursday and Friday and 8am to 3pm on Saturday.
Society president, Bob Sullivan, said orchid enthusiasts, including beginners, would be able to purchase orchids to add to their collections, with members available to answer questions about growing mediums and which orchids are suitable for the coast and local areas
It is the second major event of the season for the society, following on from last month’s Spring Show in Murwillumbah.
“Society members again received wonderful support from the local community, as they have in previous years,” Bob said.
“Visitors saw a wonderful display of many different orchids, including species and hybrids.”
Bill Brown took out Grand Champion with his Ascda. Suksamran Sunlight with Mike Carmody winning the Reserve Champion with his Cattleya Blc. Brunswick Bonanza ‘Joanie’.
Other champion winners included Ian Brown with Dendrobium delicatum (Champion Specimen); Bob and Lyn Sullivan with Dendrochilum filiform ‘Golden Chain’ (Champion Species); B and C McKeever with Den. Sailor Boy ‘Popeye’ (Champion Dendrobium); I and B You with Paph. Donna Hanes x Paph. Ice Castle (Champion Pathiopedilum; and Ian Brown with Den. Australian McBride ‘Supernatural’ x Den. Kayla ‘Biggest Apricot’ (Champion Native and Native Hybrid).
Champion Oncidium was also won by Bill Brown with his Onc. Mcina Serenade; while Bill Barnett took out Champion Novice and Champion Cymbidium with his Cym. Pink Beauty ‘Victoria’.
Brian Miller won Champion Seedling with Lc. Mini Purple x Lc angerii and J. and D. Biggs with Phal Queenslander Queen ‘Tweed Coast’ x ‘Freda’ took out Champion Phalaenopsis.
