In case you didn’t realise, it was International Grandparents’ Day on Sunday, a time to celebrate grandparents and all the things they do for, and with, you.
At St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, Kingscliff, Grandparents’ Day came a few days early, with more than two hundred grandparents of all ages flocking to the school to enjoy an impromptu concert, look at what their grandchildren are doing at school and enjoy a spot of morning tea.
“I didn’t realise it was the official Grandparents’ Day at the time,” St Anthony’s principal Lynne Pull said while watching the grandparents paint, read and play chess with their grand-children on Thursday morning.
“I just had to pick a day for it – I couldn’t have got it any closer if I’d tried,” she laughed.
Mrs Pull said it had been an extremely successful day.
“We have had grandparents come from as far away as Brisbane and one even flew from Newcastle.”
She said the morning started with an assembly with students performing “things they were working on in class” and, despite inclement weather, it was well received by the proud grandparents.
“We have never had (a Grandparents’ Day) that size before. It was just massive,” Deputy principal Mick Kennedy said.
“We put out 100 chairs for the assembly and we had double that standing.”
