There was something odd about the students and teachers of Tweed Heads Primary School last week – something very odd indeed.
You could have been excused thinking the whole school community had got dressed in the dark with everyone donning odd socks.
But it was all in a good cause – raising money for, and supporting principal Jacquie McAllum on her epic bike ride for a cancer cure later in the year.
The collection, which raised $100 for the cause, was the idea of school administration officer Carole Ball.
“I just wanted something easy that we could all do,” she said.
And let’s face it, sometimes on a school morning it’s easier to find odd socks than a pair!
And just to add a bit of fun to the day – the donations were collected not in a tin or a jar but in an odd sock.
“It was a clean one!” Carole said.
Mrs McAllum has now raised $4,450 for the ride which is now just three weeks away on August 21.
More than 1000 people are now registered to take part in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer – a two-day fundraising ride through the Queensland Countryside. As well as a way to get fit and inspire her students, it is a cause close to Jacquie’s heart, having lost a close relative to cancer.
