Business women recognised

The North Coast NSW community is being urged to nominate local business women to celebrate their amazing achievements and inspire others in the 2011 Telstra Business Women’s Awards.
Telstra Country Wide North Coast Area General Manager, Sue Passmore, said many North Coast NSW women have inspired and motivated other women to advance their own careers during the 17-year history of the Awards.
Awards winners from 2010 included Telstra NSW Business Woman of the Year Karin Adcock, Managing Director of jewellery business Pandora, Margaret Flynn, CEO of welfare organisation CentaCare Wilcannia-Forbes, and marie claire Young Business Woman of the Year Lauren Brown, of Pulse Marketing Group.
Ms Passmore said the Telstra Business Women’s Awards provided an outstanding opportunity to uncover and celebrate the successes of business women who inspire others through their extraordinary journeys.
“I encourage nominations of business women from across the North Coast of NSW who have made a major contribution to our region,” she said.
“The Awards allow women to reflect on their personal and business achievements and provide opportunities to meet peers and build business networks. Telstra also believes the Awards contribute to encouraging greater gender equality in business.”
Ms Passmore said past Awards winners and finalists surveyed this year by Telstra overwhelmingly supported the program and urged other women to enter the Awards in 2011 and enjoy the experience.
“About half of the women surveyed said they enjoyed higher self-confidence in their career and a quarter were appointed to a board position after taking part in the Telstra Awards program,” she said.
Jackie Frank, Publisher/Editor of marie claire magazine said, “We are delighted to be presenting the Telstra Young Business Women’s Award for the third consecutive year.
“These awards are very much in line with the core values of marie claire – we have long championed women’s issues and we encourage women to fully realise their strengths and talents.
We’re looking forward to celebrating the achievements of the many inspiring young women in this category and we are honoured to support this next generation of business leaders,” she said.
2010 Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year Denise Goldsworthy, who began her mining career as a trainee metallurgist at BHP’s Hunter blast furnace, also urged business women to enter the Awards.
Ms Goldsworthy, Managing Director of Rio Tinto’s Dampier Salt Limited, said, “Make 2011 the year you bite the bullet and give it a go. The entry process challenges you to decide who you are, to know what makes you a good leader, manager and business woman, and to decide what the next challenges are in your career to chase with a passion.”
Entries for the 2011 Telstra Business Women’s Awards close on June 20. Winners will enjoy the honour of being recognised with Australia’s most prestigious business women and share in more than $200,000 in cash and prizes.
Category winners of the Telstra NSW Business Women’s Awards and an overall State winner will be announced in Sydney on September 30, 2011.
State/territory winners are eligible for the National Awards which will be announced at the 2011 Telstra Australian Business Women’s Awards in Melbourne on November 18.
