Awards aimed at recognizing the achievements of the Tweed’s Youth will be held at the Twin Towns Resort on Wednesday, September 12.
Now in its third year, the Kids in Community (KIC) Tweed Shire Awards have become a major event in the region and are recognised as a model of best practice encouraging young people to help and enhance their communities.
KIC raises much-needed awareness of the optimistic and enthusiastic attitude of young people, bringing to public attention the positive and meaningful ways that youth participate in and contribute to our community.
Mrs. Gaye Breen (KIC Community Member) said it was important to recognize and show respect for young people who display a strong sense of community, justice and inclusion and those who are overcoming difficulties relating to family, culture, isolation, health and disability and achieving “against all odds”.
“Their efforts are inspirational and deserve recognition. By acknowledging all these contributions, the KIC awards encourage young people to reach out to others – both to give and to receive support,” she said.

The event has also received support from current world number two ASP Surfer Joel Parkinson.
Joel (Known as Parko) is a successful competitive surfer, and one of the current crop ‘Coolangatta’, Coolie Kids) Joel has saturated the surfing world with a talent simply groomed on the long points of his local waters/breaks around Coolangatta and Kirra. A family orientated man with three gorgeous young children and married to Monica his childhood sweetheart from high school, he has generously donated a signed surfboard to the KIC ‘Tweed Shire” Awards which will be one of the major items up for Auction on the night along with an Surfing Australia; coaching and lessons package and a Quicksilver promotions package donated by Bianca and Mark Richardson from Currumbin and a Authentic signed Titans Football donated by the Titans Community Foundation..
Local businesses have come on board and generously donated gifts, vouchers and products for a raffle to be held annual KIC awards night also.
