Classic results for Cudgen Carnival

Setting up for the Cudgen Classic at Kingscliff.

NORTHCLIFFE and Cudgen competitors shared the honours in the teams events at this year’s Cudgen Classic Surf Lifesaving event in Kingscliff last week – but it was Kurrawa’s Luke Cuff and Amie Nurthen of Mooloolaba who made history.
The pair became the winners of the first open event in the classic’s 18-year history.
Cuff beat out determined local competitor Nathan Gray while Nurthen fought off a fierce challenge from national ironwoman competitor Bonnie Hancock, formerly from Sawtell.
Event organiser Nigel Hughes said it was one of the most successful events in the carnival’s history.
“The Classic went fantastically well,” he said.
“We had 340 registered for the event from under-10s through to opens for the first time.
“The day ran very smooth due to the commitment and hard work of all the Cudgen SLSC volunteers.
“Mayor Barry Longland was there to watch the event and presented medals to the winners. He also drew the names of the 5 XCEL boards that were donated.
“The open men and women winners received $500 in cash which was sponsored by Kozzi.”
Hughes said adding senior and under-19 competitors to what has long been a junior event had proven very successful.
“We are looking forward to the 2014 event,” he said.
