Tweed Junior Cricket by Odette Quine
STRONG batting has seen Cudgen triumph in both games of the Tweed District Cricket under-12 competition.
The second day of the two-day match between Pottsville and Cudgen Green saw Pottsville continue batting and setting a sizeable target of 246 for the Cudgen Green team to chase.
Pottsville were well served by Daniel Acret 75 not out and Mitchell Boyd 49 not out.
However it wasn’t enough – with Cudgen, who had amassed 174 last week, coming strongly to secure the win.
Jack Cullen 18 retired, Parker Bryant 40 retired and Hugh Easterbrook retired on 28 led the way as Cudgen reached the target in the 33rd over.
The second day of the Murwillumbah – Cudgen Gold match looked evenly poised with only two runs the difference after the first week.
However Cudgen Gold were in a batting mood amassing 4/210 to be too strong for the home team who finished with 8/141. Harris Mclean continued his good form this year with a well made 32 and new comer to the Murwillumbah team Fletcher Condon reaching 45 not out.
In the under-14 Ballina District Competition, Pottsville defeated Alstonville by just one run in a thriller at Alstonville.
Alstonville resumed on with only one wicket in hand and managed just seven more runs, leaving Pottsville with 100 runs to win.
R. Lillis and C. McDowell resumed the Pottsville innings and batted well to both score 16 runs, leaving the lower order to score the remaining runs with D. Brown 4 and T. Spencer 4 not out.
Pottsville reached their target with one wicket in hand showing that patience with the bat and consistent and accurate bowling to beat the competition front runners.
Murwillumbah were in strong form in day two of their match between Murwillumbah and Ballina Bears 2 at Saunders Oval.
Murwillumbah declared on 3/242, setting the Bears 185 for victory. They fell almost 100 runs short, and were all out for 88.
Some outstanding bowling from Ashton Wilson who finished on figures of 1/2 and two maidens from four overs, and Callum Opperman 3/2 and two maidens off four overs.
Cudgen have continued on their winning way in the under-16 Ballina District Competition.
After bowling Alstonville Blue out on day one, 10/64 Cudgen resumed on 3/92. They finally declared at 7/170 in the 29th over.
Outstanding batting from Max Bryant 69, Connor Ziebell 47, Brodie Padden 10 and Ryan Lahrs hitting a quickfire 18 off six balls helped Cudgen to victory.
Alstonville Blue reached 6/83 by the end of the day’s play stopping Cudgen a chance to play for outright victory. Ryan Lahrs bowled beautifully and ended with figures of 3/15. Cudgen brought home first innings points
The Mullum/Murbah team travelled to Alstonville resuming day two of their game with a sizeable target of 198 for victory. The boys gave it a good shake and ended all out for 180. Great batting from Issac Fisher 86, Anthony Bird 37 and Will Barlow on 26. A great effort from the boys from Mullum/Murbah to come so close to victory.
Tweed Valley Big Bash
The Big Bash started on Thursday at Reg Dalton oval Cudgen.
The competition is a modified cricket format that runs each Thursday evening from 5pm at various venues around the Tweed.
