Grant approved for Cudgen Surf Club

The Cudgen Headland SLSC is set to receive a major makeover following the announcement of a NSW government grant.

The $45,000 grant was officially announced by member for Tweed Geoff Provest at the club’s annual fundraising day on January 27.

“The $45,000 has been provided for the refurbishment of the ground floor training and equipment area,” Mr Provest said.

He said it was a pleasure to help such a hard-working, dedicated group.

Club president Adam Mills said the grant would provide a much-needed upgrade of the club’s facilities.

“The grant is for the refurbishment of the existing first aid room, including installation of a fire rated ceiling system, electrical and water services,” he said.

“One end of the first aid room is located in the older section of the original club building and is lined with asbestos.

“Although the asbestos is dormant in its current state (painted), the funds will allow us to modify the existing first aid facility, including the removal and disposal of existing asbestos sheet lining, expansion of the space to incorporate two separate areas (treatment area and patient recovery area), replace the ceiling and wall linings including fire resistant ceiling to the underside of the existing timber floor joists, replacement of floor coverings and installation of built-in storage cupboards.

“The works are currently being priced; it is not anticipated that any works will be started before April to minimise the impact on the patrol season and I expect that it will take about three to four weeks to finish off the works.”

Despite the heavy rain and winds on the day, a large and enthusiastic crowd was on hand for the announcement and for the draw of the club’s annual “car raffle”.

The car raffle – now in it’s 47th year, is well-known along the Tweed Coast and has long been one of the club’s major fundraising activities – usually taking place on the Sunday closest to Australia Day.

First prize this year went to ticket 249 Dave Pershouse, with ticket No 1 winning second for Garry Ryder, while Scott Julius finished third.
